NHIF Late Payment Penalties and NHIF Mpesa Pay Bill Number (2022 Update)

The Kenyan government’s National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) is responsible for providing health insurance to Kenyans. NHIF stands for National Health Insurance Fund. The NHIF is managed and administered by the government. Its principal purpose is to give all Kenyans affordable healthcare. The insurance cover for self-employed people is 500 KES per month or 6000 KES per year. Employees earning 100,000 Kenyan shillings or more are entitled to 1700 Kenyan shillings per month from their employers. You must pay for three months at a total cost of 1500 after registering as a new member, and you must wait two months for it to mature before you can start receiving advantages. Normally, the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) is not paid until the fourth month following enrolment.

You will see a message similar to the first image after dialing *155# on the NHIF USSD.

When you’ve chosen your favourite and most convenient language, the menu will look like the second image.

Then you may decide which path to take. Click 1 to register with NHIF if you are a new member. Option 3 allows you to use the same USSD to select a hospital. Option 2 allows you to check if your NHIF account is paid in whole or if there are any outstanding balances. Option 4 could be utilized if you were penalized for not paying NHIF for a month. Option 5 is for NHIF account questions and help. To exit the NHIF menu, press 0 on your keyboard.

Kenyan National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) Online Platform

You can also access the NHIF’s services via the online portal. Their official website is https://nhifcare.co.ke/Otp.html. To log on, all you need is your ID number, just like the USSD. With the exception that this is a webpage, the menu is essentially identical to the USSD. After you submit your ID number, they email you a one-time code that is valid for one day. You log in to your NHIF self-service portal using the code. You get to choose the options you want to put to the test.

Latest Mpesa NHIF pay bill number

Because it is the most convenient and commonly used by Kenyans, M-PESA is the billing method used by NHIF. To efficiently pay the NHIF, you must follow these steps.

1) From your Sim Toolkit, open M-PESA.

2) Select Lipa na M-PESA the options.

3) Choose the option to input a business number, then type 200222 as the business or pay bill number.

4) Press enter account number after entering your National ID number.

5) Decide how much you want to pay into the NHIF.

6) Enter your M-PESA pin to complete the transaction.

M-PESA will prompt you to confirm the payment of ‘the amount you selected, for example, ‘Ksh. 500’ to NHIF for an ‘ID number’; they will display your ID number exactly as you entered it.

You can utilize the USSD or send a new SMS to 21101 with ID, then space and type your ID number, e.g., “ID 12312301,” to see if your contributions were received. NHIF will send you a message with all of your NHIF status information. Your member number, your most recent contributions, the dependents listed on your NHIF card, your ID number, and the year you were born will all be included in the message.

NHIF fines for Late Monthly Payment

Every month before the 9th, you must pay NHIF; if you pay after that date, you will be charged a penalty of 250 KES for each month you do not pay.

You won’t be able to use your NHIF card immediately if you pay your penalty today. You’ll have to wait 60 days, or two months, to enjoy the cover again.

NHIF deactivates your account if you are self-employed and have not contributed for a year or more. To reactivate your account, pay 1500 KES and wait two months to receive the cover.

Does NHIF Charge to be a member?

It’s completely free to apply for the NHIF membership. There is no charge for this service. The only time contributions are made is on a monthly basis.

For inpatient care, the NHIF can be used in any NHIF-accredited hospital. Only the hospital listed on your card can assist you with outpatient services.

Coverage limits apply to the NHIF. The maximum daily spend in low-cost governmental hospitals is 1200 KES, whereas the maximum daily spend in private high-cost hospitals is 4000 KES. These prices are only for inpatient services.

The NHIF does not cover anyone who are over the age of 18. They must have their own card.
